Dr hab. Beata Sierocka, prof. DSW has been the dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Journalism at the University of Lower Silesia in Wrocław since 2008. In research and teaching, she specializes in communication, transcendental-pragmatic and critical-hermeneutic philosophy. Her monograph entitled Communicating Aggression in a Megamedia World was published by the prestigious Routledge publishing house.
Routledge is a global publisher of academic books, journals, and online resources from the fields of humanities and social sciences. Established in 1836, it has published the works of the greatest thinkers and scholars of the last hundred years, including Adorno, Einstein, Russell, Popper, Wittgenstein, Jung, Bohm, Hayek, McLuhan, Marcuse and Sartre.
The main aim of the monograph is to show that in the era of megamedia culture, communication aggression and violence constitute the highest (indeed “fatal”) threats to the fundamental form of social existence, which is a communicative community.
The tasks undertaken by the author ultimately boil down to unequivocally diagnosing the threat posed to the existence of a real communicative community by the phenomena of megamedia aggression, to understand its specificity and extraordinary importance, and at the same time to reveal those of its factors that we are able to influence, and so, consciously correct. Intellectual tools to defend ourselves against the destructive power of megamedia aggression will have to be provided by – as the conclusions of the monograph suggest – a critical-normative theory of media communication, the structure of which will have to be based on the project of social responsibility and the model of ethics of shared responsibility.
